My advice is let the pup run free as long as you can.  Let them learn to chase cats, squirrel, and everything else on their own.  I like to let mine bays cows in open pastures and get them in and around water early.  Get them about 8 or 9 months old and let them bay a good sow in a pen a couple times.  At about 1 yr, I start running them with older dogs but I am careful as to what hog I put them out on.  They don't need to see a rank boar in the woods their first time out.

I think too many people start pups too young in a pen and then at 1 year old they want to know why the dog don't hunt but it will bay in a pen.  Anydog can bark at a hog in a pen.  Let pups learn the woods early and let them trash a little.  There is time to break them off trash later.  If  pup not doing anything by 1.5 yrs, they don't stay with me.
