Muriatic acid will give it a dull whitish oxidized appearance. At least if did to a set of alum wheels I used it on, fortunately that was the look I was going for.  YBM, I'm guessin your cleanin up a dog box.  I've never done aything that big, but have polished a lot of smaller pieces with a buffer and mothers polish with great success. Don't use one of those little pussy polishers like from walmart that use terry cloth pads. Get a real buffer, one that looks like a big grinder and go at it.  Smear the polish around then let the machine do the work. The buffer will sling most of the compound off. Then just take some clean terry cloth towels and wipe off any excess. Pretty easy really.
