I believe they both have their own place in a kit and you should have both for certain circumstances
I agree, I use sutures when dealing with a muscle cut to help mend it back together and I use staples + vet glue to close up skin cuts. I can say this for certain, staples will help heal up a skin cut 10x's faster than just hydro theraphy and vetericyn alone. My smoke dog got cut down bad back in feb. and I used a combo of staples, glue, hydro theraphy and vetericyn and the cut ( over 7" long and deep) healed up way quicker than his most recent cut (2 1/2-3" skin only) using only hydro theraphy and vetericyn (i was out of staples).
With a bit of reading online and a steady hand you can damn sure save a ton of money in vet bills if you are comfortable doing the job yourself, I know I have with good results............thats the great thing about the internet, now days there is no reason to use the " I don't know how" excuse anymore, with enough reading and referencing you can figure out the right way to do just about anything these days online.
