When I was a kid my second favorite crop we raised was corn...first was Maize on account all work was done with powered equipment...but we cut the tops off of the corn stalks right above the last ear of corn...we did this right after the kernel's started to mature...we used hand made machete's that my father made from and old timey cross cut saw...If I remember correctly it was for the corn to dry quicker...first to market and the price is higher...not only that but maturing quicker and getting it to the barn before a big rain or a hurricane were other good reasons...I never asked but that was my thinking on it...
