I've always like catahoulas. I was raised around one and at the ripe ole age of 4 I was able to play outside by myself. That dog wouldn't leave my side, and wouldn't let a critter or person in the yard with me.

But, many different breeds can be good yard hounds. Had a boxer once that was a great yard dog. Barked at everything and kept the possums off the porch. Also had a 1/2 Australian Shepard 1/2 collie. He was a smart dude.
