Reuben,

On those magnetic base antennas like you posted above, usually there will be a spring looking thing that threads onto the base, then the actual antenna shaft is held into that by an allen head set screw.  They usually come with a card that tells you the proper length for frequency.  You need to take a hacksaw or something and cut the antenna to the correct length.  I can't remember off hand what frequency range the Garmin system uses, but you can google and find it.
