  yes you are right on the gears you have to line the two dots up when you put them together , but this is a newer style block [ crate motor ] and I don't remember if it had the fiber cam gear or not . been since 2006 since I've had hardly any problems out of the truck except for routine preventive maintenance .  I don't wait for something to fail on the side of the road I will usually change out a part after so many years or miles working or not .
