If the dog can get to it, 99% of the time he will pull stitches or staples out. If I staple , it's just 2 or 3 to pull it closed ,but leaving spaces to drain. I see little difference in time to heal between a vet sutured wound and keeping it clean and letting it granulate from inside out. My advice would be if you are gonna staple or sew it, u better put dog on good antibiotic retiming and keep him off the dirt til it's healed. I'll usually hose pipe rinse it good a couple times a day, and top it off with vet ricin or purple spray. If any sign of infection, on a reg size dog, a couple ml penicillin for 3 days then oral antibiotics for another 10 days to 2 weeks.
