This is hard to do but once you catch him turn  him loose agin . Do that acouple of times , so he knows your hands don't mean " hunts over "
If every time you put your hands on him he knows he's gonna go in the box instead of hunt ( sounds like a high drive dog ) then he's gonna avoid you .

I had a bird dog that as a pup was just like your talking about and it never failed for him to make me look like a fool when it counted.
