Its easier if you start as a puppy, but can be done with any dog. Build a bond with him. Teach sit, stay, and come. Start with treats or pieces of kibble as rewards. Put him on a 20' check chord with a choke chain. Give the "come" command with a small jerk on the chord. Reel him in to you with the chord and give a jerk as needed if he gets off track. Praise/Reward him when he gets it right. He needs to eventually understand that there is no option but to do as told. The shock collar will replace the chord after he is consistent on the chord. Give the "come" command and "nick" him with the shock collar. The "nick" replaces the jerk on the chord. If he's on his way to you, dont shock him when he's doing the right thing. Only when he goes the wrong way.
Dog needs to know you are the Boss, not just the guy giving him a ride to the woods.
I make my dogs sit every day before I feed them. They stay sitting, I put down the bowl, their eyes are on ME, and I say "ok", then they eat.
thanks for the info i was gonna ask u how iften do they have these trials and is the ever any in south east texas near houston
Terrier Trials are every April and Oct in Tyler. Come on up and I'll help you work with your dog if needed. Tyler isnt that far and you can camp at the arena or stay in a dog friendly hotel in Tyler. There is room for RV's and trailers.
There is also the East TX Hog Baying Championship in Kountze. It's an open bay event, but they have a Terrier only class as well. We run our jagds in all open classes and do pretty well.
