Neither me, nor either 2 of my buddies who have dogs, own a dog that will range past 500 unless they're running a hog.  We walk hunt and what you said is exactly right. What good am I to my dogs when they're bayed 3/4 mile away. Granted on flat ground with my youth I can run a mile in under 7 minutes but I bet it takes me 15 minutes or more to go 3/4 in the woods. And by that time the bulldog ain't gonna have no gas, and all the dogs we run are rough so they'll probably be cut to all hell if it's a good one. To each his own. And people who can hunt horse back or off a rig well maybe long range ain't that bad. But I'm on the ground and I like my 2-300 yard jog into a bay and letting the catch dog go at 20 yards.
