I start my pups on a 75 ft. ski rope when they are about 4-4 1/2 months old. When I call them I tone them. Even if I have to haul them in & then I make a big fuss over them. I never shock them when they are this young. I want them to learn to like coming to me. Once they have that down & they know to come to the tone, I'll take them for walks. always try to make it a win, win situation. When they are a little older or if they just flat out ignore you, then you might have to bump them to make them come but I have a handle on them before I ever start them on hogs. Even when I run older pups in my truing pen, I normally have a young pup, I am teaching to heel. It is fun when the hog crosses, I lead the young pup over there & encourage him to open. Most of the time they are raring to go.
You can do this on any age dog, I just start mine young.
