With a gen 1, you might be able to stretch 300, maybe more on a bright moon/star lit night. Added external  illumination will help, but if u can get a gen 2, or even better, 3, it will yield you better clarity and distance but you will pay a lot more than $300 for a gen 3. Swing over the cabelas in twalatin (sp) and look through their nvg scopes, especially at night and looking at distances.
