I've saw dogs leave me winding and find them bayed 2 miles away but unless they are open trailing dogs you don't know if they winded the hogs or winded the track and ran it to the hogs, cattle, bear or whatever. A dog doesn't have to put his nose on the ground to trail. A dog that is straight "wind" and 0 trail would always have to go into the wind or be traveling parallel to the game in a cross wind. Although a half mile would not be unrealistic for a dog to directly wind something when conditions are right, these other angles are just food for thought.
