Dogs respond off of cues thats the reason why you can use the same dog for different jobs.  They dont know which job they are supposed to do because they can read minds, or because you said "we are working cows today so be sure you don't go looking for hogs".  Its because when you load them up in the cattle trailer with horses that cues them that you are working cattle.  Or load the 4-wheeler and cut collars in the back of the truck they got hogs on thier mind.  But if all your dog has ever done at night, was sit in the kennel they are'nt gonna be cued into hunting.  But they will learn to hunt at night and the dogs with high drive obviously will learn faster.  One time my step mom wanted to go hunting, well all the time my dads dogs had seen her it was time for petting,  so they just thought it was time for a trail ride.  lol.  She went hunting with us several times and it was that way every time.  But they would hunt when she was not around.
