Other than field testing(hunting) the only way to TEST one is to have them BAERR tested.    They hook electrodes to them and test the firing of nerves in the ears.    If you have a location near you that can do it is normally only about $50 if I remember correct.

I think there is one is Seguin and Dallas, I would think there would be one in Houston.
