I use both.  I prefer a dog box, but I also have chains in each of my trucks.   I keep a combo lock on my dog box too, in case I spend the night somewhere, or have to leave the truck unattended, I can lock the dogs up...not that anyone would want to steal my potlickers...it just makes me feel better.      I use the chains for the occasions that I cannot move the dog box, or if I happen to be hauling more dogs than will fit in the box.
