I prefer a dog box, for reasons stated above, and to be double sure that a dog never makes it over the side while I'm driving.  that never ends well.  I realize that it can be prevented but I like the peace of mind.  I usually have my curs in the two compartment dog box, with my catch dog chained to the center of the box on a chain just long enough to let him lay down if he wants to.  keeps him plenty far from the edge of the pickup.
