It has been proven that certain traits can be attached to color genes. Take the Catahoula for instance which in some cases has a deafness problem which is attached to the double merle gene. The common line of thought is a mostly white or white face with cracked eye Catahoula has the potential for deafness. Phenotype is not always indicative of a dog having the double merle gene, as some white dogs are not carriers. The only true way to determine this is through DNA testing which I would venture to say most people who breed these dogs aren't going to do.

Good point. Not to pick on Catahoula's, but I feel that what you have said can pretty much be applied to that breed (and probably more so than BMC's) as well. Lots of people breeding for eye and coat color without regard to all the other desirable qualities that make the dogs more than pets.
