Here are some articles on color coat, for what i have seen there are certain traits that can be attached to a color due to genenetic makeup of breed of dog.like when the Mountain cur in the beginning was formed there was a few diferent styles in the phenotype and not to mention, that the breeders that wanted to go in different directions between cur or hound as they broke off they became the PLOTT HOUND,TENN. BRINDLE CUR,ORIGANAL MOUNTAIN CUR AND KEMMER CUR these dogs where yellow, red, brindle, saddle back, black, and rigneck, but alll these dogs go back to a certain genetic base and from there they were bred for traits and phenotype
http://homepage.usask.ca/~schmutz/dogcolors.htmlActually the plott hound came from Germany with the plott family of NC and likely traces back to a brindle dog they still have over there that still verry much resembles it (Hanoverian Schweisshund). The only publicized out crosses that I have read about were to lepord curr (not catahoula) and old time black and tans that ran by "Belvins hound" although there were most likely more outcrosses over the years that werent let out. I will try to find the history of them and post it on another topic, at the least it is a good read.
