Cyrus was his name and I paid $75 for him at 7 months old in 1973. He never saw a hog in his life and on the day I bought him I swung by my hunting area on the way home and he bayed and my catch dog caught a 50 pound shoat and a 200 pound sow! That dog took me under his wing and showed me everything I know about hog and hogdogs today. I had him 10 years and he helped start my professional hog hunting business in 1985. He died when he was shot baying a sow. He felt no pain, the bullet bounced off the hog's shoulder blade and went into his brain.
He was out of the Texas NB Hunt Ranch cow dog stock. They had a ranch in Livermore, CA and another in Covelo, CA. I found an ad in Tom Stodghill's ARF magazine for the pup. His parents and aunts and uncles were all at the Covelo ranch and they all looked like a bunch of scarred up black mouth curs, with no teeth in the front from busting them out on hard headed cows. Every dog was yellow, except Cyrus. He looked like a catahoula leopard dog, spotted back, walker hound looking white legs and belly with red head, even had one full blue eye. Biggest canine teeth on a dog I have ever seen.
Cyrus knew we liked big boars, so he sought them out most of the time. Stone broke, tireless, go yonder dog. Makes me want to cry. Who's dumb idea was it to start this topic?
