I currently have a 01 2.7 single cab Tacoma manual trans 4x4. Well actually I been hunting out of a 09 impala since around Christmas when I thought my timing chain had finally ate through the retainers but after pulling my motor last week I just had a broken crank pulley with only two bolts holding it on. I’m going to eventually fix it but I’ve already patched the frame, raptor lined it, been in the trans several times and now im gonna go ahead and put new gaskets and run the valves and check the chain. She’s been a great worn out truck. But im tired of fixing and looking for something that’ll pull a boat or a couple of fourwheelers without being a dog and something that can take a pig trail every once in awhile with a mud hole and dirt road but also be a good daily. something I don’t have to pull the cab or transmission to fix stuff or be a rocket scientist. I know it’s hard to ask for not a lot of plastic on these newer trucks. I’ve looked into the small liter duramax trucks and the 09+ tacomas. I don’t need a full size. Easy answer would be a older z71 but everyone has one of those and I’d like something different

I have always been a Chevy man but my last one 2013 Z-71 has been nothing but trouble. Lifters have gone out twice and had to have the transmission rebuilt. My mechanic says they have gone straight downhill. He also says the two best trucks on the market are Toyota and ford.Just his opinion but he works on a lot of vehicles. I would look for a lil newer Toyota with a 6 cylinder in it.

That’s sucks to hear. Surely the Toyota v6 s of today are better than the ones of the 90s. I don’t plan on a lift if anything a leveling kit and 31s-33s. My grandpa owned one for awhile but heck I think he had 35s under it and wondered why it wouldn’t pull

I have a crew cab 06 z71 Colorado with the 5 cylinder. Sadly it’s an auto with electric 4Wd but I have been used it like a truck ranching and hunting and it’s still going. Been mighty good to me. On 2nd motor(my fault) Front clip has been replaced 3x from 2 deer and an oilfield gate that wasn’t supposed to be closed, I smoked at about 40 one night trying to cut a running hog off from the river. Here in about 2 months I’ll either be ready to sell it or build it.

Slim…I am a ford man but I was looking for a 4x4 Colorado with the 5 cylinder engine…my nephew has one going on 400,000 miles on it…I couldn’t find one at the time and I really liked the fuel economy compared to all other comparable trucks …a Tacoma fuel economy is close to a Ford F-150…so I got a 4x4 F-150 with the king ranch package with the 6 cylinder eco boost engine and no regrets on my decision…it’s a 2016 and I have replaced the brake shoes, one oxygen sensor and that is about it…

I’m still driving my 35 year old Chevy step side I bought new. The engine finally gave up the ghost, the new engine is in, the transmission has been rebuilt and installed, hope to have it running in the next week or so. I have a hard time letting it go, and new truck prices are ridiculous.

Sounds like your driving a classic…I finally sold my 7.3 F-350 diesel after 23 years of driving…replaced water pump once…and went through a few alternators, replaced brakes and a few suspension parts…was a good and tough old truck but driving my F-150 is a smoother ride…and fuel economy is better…

I’m in a 2002 F250 7.3 on 35’s. It’s been a great truck so far but I definitely wouldn’t run it through woods or through mud holes. Driving around some fields is the most off roading it sees. I mainly try to use my buggy hunting and so I just pull in to the property then unload the buggy. My friend Warren has a 2018 Tacoma with the manual transmission and it’s been a good truck for him. He’s on a small lift with 33’s or 35’s and pulls his boat to the river all the time with no issues.
I really like the new Rubicon Jeep Gladiators too but I think they’re priced way too high for what is essentially a mid sized truck.
