Monkey....gone but never forgotten! RIP

It rained some this morning, so I loaded Monkey and headed to the woods. First time I stopped to turn him out, I had just about let him out when deer dogs opened up about 100 yards from me.....they ran all over the block I was about to turn Monkey into, so that kind of ruined that area for today......

I drove around, trying to avoid deer hunters and deer dogs. Went down a powerline, saw a dim road going down into a swamp, kind of along the edge between a swamp and a grown up cutover.

I listened, didn't hear any hounds, so turned Monkey out and went down the trail. He left as soon as we hit the woods and I didn't see him again.

I had walked maybe 1/4 mile when I heard Monkey bay down in the swamp about 250-300 yards or so from me. I headed that way, got fairly close, heard the hog run him, so I knew it was a bigger hog. Just about the time I got a glimpse of the hog in the palmettos, cabbage palms and vines, he sees me and breaks.

Monkey is eating on his A** the whole time, and stops him within about 50 yards. I sneak in again, and the hog breaks again, Monkey is eating on his rear end and he stops pretty quick. This time he is not as quick to run.......

I sneak in, see teeth, hear them popping so I kneel down and shoot him right under the ear with my .22, from about 25 feet. Down he goes and Monkey piles on him. I am hoping he doesn't get up!!

He doesn't, but now I have to get him out of the woods......An hour later...I get back to the truck , take a few pics and deliver him to the deer camp. He weighed 145 on their scales and was a barr hog, so he will be good for their New Years Eve party!!!

I would rather catch the hogs, but it was just Monkey and I and they wanted hogs so down he went. Monkey has figured out what he can catch and what he can't. Getting him wrecked a year and a half ago, taught him to respect the bigger aggressive hogs.

Suits me, hopefully he will live longer that way!

Barr hogs teeth. He had just the right teeth to cut a dog.....

Good hunt Mark!  I bet your hunt was a lot quieter than mine was... sounded like a public school field trip at the zoo as I was hunting today Grin  I think we caught the twin to your bar!

Other than the deer hounds running around me it was pretty quiet! I called you on the way up, was going to see if you wanted to go, but didn't get you. You will have a message or two from me on your phone. I needed you and your catchdog today, that way I wouldn't have had to waste a .22 shell...... Shocked
