Dog Jockeys

As you are aware I am new here and considering getting a few dogs to hunt hogs with hence all the questions. The last few posts have dealt with "what you would do". Now I want to know "what you would not do" So here goes.

1. What bloodlines would you stay away from?
2. What breeders or dog jockeys would you stay away from?

I am not posting this to hurt anyone however if I plan on making an investment in hog dogs. I want all the information I can get.

Starting out, I would tell you that your desired hunting style will dictate which types of dogs you'll like.  When you know that, then you'll be able to scope those out who have those type dogs.

No matter the specific breed of dog or the individual breeder, none will completely satisfy everybody.

I am pretty new to "owning" my own hog dogs, but have been hunting with dogs for a long time.  The guys i have learned from put it to me like this.  "this is not a cheap sport/hobby, and no matter which way you look it, you will make some bad buys and some good buys."  Dog Jocky's are out there, but one person may have a good experience with one and another may not.  i am lucky in that my first hog dogs that i have bought of ETHD are working out great.  You have to start somewhere if your going to do this, and i can promise you that there are going to be dogs you buy that you wish you never would have, and there will be dogs you buy that will make your pack.  Finding out what type of dog is right or wrong in my "opinion" comes with time.  You will find what fits your needs and style of hunting.   If i were you find someone to hunt with that has dogs, and see what you like about each breed they have.  That is what determined what i wanted.  This is all an opinion on my behalf or someone that has shown me the ropes.  some of it was the best advice i could have recieved when it came to getting my own thing going.

I am by no means a pro but this is my first year to start my own pack and here's what i have learned. My best dogs are ones I have raised from pups I don't care who u buy dogs from no one is going to sell there best dog.   Or atleast that's the way I see it.   I didn't raise all my dogs but I hsve learned about buyin dogs is buy them from somebody that treats them they way u would.  Example. I spend alot of time with my dogs they are big ole babbies. So I buy dogs that I know and can tell where handeled alot

No one is going to be selling a good dog for cheap. It doesnt happen. 300 dollar dog is just that......... Anydog over 600 should come with a trail. And you should hunt with the owner before hand. Save your money and your yop dog first and then use him to help bring up good blooded dogs. Always ask how many pups the breeder is keeping(good advice Bryant gave me). If they breed just to sell pups, run. Dont beleave what you read on the internet as truth, ALOT of people are gods in their own minds.

The advice and information posted so far is great stuff Buck in helping you to lessen your chances of a bad experience but I would also like to add that I feel that THE BEST PLACE to pick up a great dog is right here on ETHD! If you spend a little time on here chatting and posting up you can get a real good feel for alot of the great dogs and for their owners. I have never purchased a dog here myself but I definately have seen a few dogs that came from great yards that I would have jumped on if I didn't have to deal with quarantine restrictions. If you click on the guys & girls name you can check their previous posts and get a pretty good feel for yourself on how much weight their word is worth. Good luck on getting you some great dogs but remember having great dogs and alot of time in the forests and fields with them will lead to the disease known as Hogdogherria and it is a great disease that will cloud your judgement!

Whether a bloodline is good or not depends solely on the person hunting the dogs. I like certain ones here in florida and my hunting buddy likes others.  i wont own some of his dogs cause they dont fit my style and mine dont fit his.  that being said some of the best dogs i have ever owned were "gimmies".

Good luck and be prepared to take out a loan its an expensive hobby..

Man I would say stay away from all Dog Jockey's period.  In my experience they don't "hunt" their dogs they show them.  If you know some people with pretty good dogs, go with them, watch their dogs, and if they have a breeding try to beat them out of a puppy.  Most of the time you'll find that your best dogs you will have raised yourself.  Not always, I have 2 that I have gotten from people off this site and they are pretty good dogs.  But always beware before you buy.  Make sure you get a trial!  Happy huntin' and good luck with your dogs.

Lots of good advice, so glad the way this could have gone was prevented. These guys have given some great advice, and the best advice I can give is follow what you have read above this and you'll be in HOG heaven....literally! good luck.
