Hey guys! I been running my dogs pretty hard the last 2 weeks and today when I went out to feed my puppies this morning I noticed one of my older dogs with a slight limp! I took him off of his run and put him in a kennel until this evening after I fed the rest of the dogs , I took him in the front yard to tinker with him and gave him a rub down and got him to trot around the yard and put weight on the problem leg. I couldn't get a response of pain when I rubbed and massaged his leg and he is still putting weight on the leg when standing which leads me to believe I may have just over worked him?? I was wondering if or how anybody has ever dealt with this??

I have an old dog that gets stove up like that. When he is hunting hard several days in a row I will give him (and other tired dogs) an aspirin with a Gatorade chaser. The aspirin just thins the blood allowing for better circulation thru the sore muscles. Works for my tired dogs. Good luck...

I've always used Bute paste ( its for horses) you can pick it up at the local feed store. I give injured or sore dogs 1 click of bute about 10 hrs before hunting and then 1 more click just before and after hunting.
But it is usually me needing the rub down and bute not the dogs.

All my dogs(including me) pull strange muscles from time to time, I prefer not to medicate(myself included).... pain is your body's way of telling you that you need to give it a break. A quiet week or two in the turn out usually fixes it for me

DMSO from any feed store is one of the best and most cost effective products for muscle soreness, collagen repair post injury, and swelling- popular in the horse world for sore muscles it absorbs in the skin within two minutes. It is also a great dis-infectant on wounds etc. It is less than 10 bucks at any feed store, popular in the horse world. Cut the bottle with enough water to activate a heat reaction, a shot or two is usually enough and you will feel the bottle heat up then go away and you dont have to worry about it again until you buy a new bottle. If you dont the heat reaction will take place on your skin every time you use it which is not harmfull but a little scary and feels horrible.

x2 if your referring to drugs or NSAIDS like asprin--DMSO has no bad side effects--all good!

I've used dmso enough on horses to know the only good it does is to give me a strange garlic-y taste in my mouth when I get some on my skin No doubt that chit absorbs quick.... never seen any real advantages to using it though...

Dexamthasone....it is an injectable steroid and all hog doggers should have some. It has a long list of uses including snake bites, severe trauma and even working out sore muscles. I would not use it to often and would not use it before a hunt. If I have hunted long and hard I will give mine 1 1/2 cc's before I put them up. It will take swelling out of joints and sore muscles and allow them to rest. Because it is a steroid it will inhibit healing in cuts so needs to be used sparingly when cut.
