I am new to this and trying to start training my 5 month old pups.
I am having trouble getting a small hog to use for training, so I was wondering if I could substiture a potbellied pig to train my pups until I can get a while hog. I am looking for a shoat or small hog that can not hurt the pups.

I dont want to try if it is going to ruin the pups from hunting the wild hogs later.

Thanks and any advise is welcome.

Also if any one is willing to help me train or expose the pups to hogs please let me know

I live in Brazoria county right on the Texas coast.

Keep taking them to the woods and hope that you can run into ahog that they can start on. Keep trying to find a small pig about 50# and go tie it in the woods go back get the pups walk them in let them find it. And do not get in a hury with your pups.

It worked for me once the dog hunts fine now, I know 3 other people that have done it more than me and never had any trouble from starting pup on potbellied pigs.

I would just pay one of these people that train dogs to work ur pups for about a month then take them to the woods...i only say this because right now u don't have the means to start them right...once they know to find hogs just keep takin them to the woods they will get better

Thanks for the tips guys, just out of the blue a hog trapper I had called from an add in the paper a while back called me today. He had two piglets about 25 pounds each!
I got them in a round pen I built today and my pups actually spent a little time barking at them from outside the pen.
After they begin gaining more confidence I will do what you said about tying  a pig inthe woods and letting my pups find him.
Thanks yall.

PUT THEM IN THERE WITH THE PIGLET THE DOG WILL LEARN REAL QUICK TO GET OUT OF THE WAY IT WILL START BAYING WHEN THE DOG IS BAYING GOOD THEN GO TIE THE HOG UP I WOULD NOT PAY ANYONE TO TRAIN YOUR DOG JUST SPEND SOMETIME WITH IT AND SOONER OR LATTER YOU WILL BE BAYIN IN THE WOODS WITH A DOG YOU TRAINED NOT SOME ONE ELSE TO ME THAT IS MORE IMPORTANT....(NOT SAYING OTHER PEOPLE DONT TRAIN DOGS BETTER BUT IT WILL MAKE YOU FEEL PROUD OF YOUR DOGS IF YOU ARE THE ONE TO TEACH IT)   PATIENCE IS THE KEY DONT EXPECT A WHOLE BUNCH OUT OF A FIVE MONTH OL PUP IF IT IS BARKING IT IS PROGRESSING JUST LET IT LEARN

good deal! some people don't have the resources to start a dog on hogs. I was one of them. I paid for my first dog to be started on hogs. after one week he knew what a hog was and would bay. I then trained him the way I wanted. the pups I have now I was lucky enough to have someone to take my dogs with and they learned that way. I wouldn't pay someone to try to finish out a dog, but if someone doesn't have the resources I would definantly let an experienced dogman start a dog for me so I don't screw it up. once I learned a bit more I would definantly do it all myself.
