Im new and I have two 5 month old pups. I just picked up two piglets and today was my and the pups first training experience. I dont have a finished dog to teach them, but luckly my pet boxer seemed to hate pigs and was pretty good at barking at the hogs from outside the crate. The pups however were not so interested.
After a while, one of the pups finally showed a little interest. I took out one of the piglets out of the crate and held him from the back legs and moved it towards the pups. They didnt know what to do until they heard him grunt.............and then it was on!!! Both pups just ran up and started tearing into the hog. It was crazy how pissed they were at it. they each locked on an ear and I could not get them to let go. The poor pig lost half an ear by the time I could get them off. I put them outside the pen and they did their best to  jump/climb back into the pen. (At this point I am grinning ear to ear)
I dont want them to learn to just try and catch and want them to bay, so I let the bigger pig out into the pen and figured he would attack the pups and show them to respect the hog. ( I was also scared they would become afraid if it hit them....didnt really know what to do)
I let both pups into the pen and boom dog on each ear. The pig could not fight them off.
I took one of the pups out and put only one back in. The pig would stand its ground but the pup still got him . The pig did get a few bites in but the pup acted like she didnt feel them and kept going till she got  the ear. I thought it went as good as I could have imagined.
The only thing I am worried about is how do you teach them not to catch all the time.
Do I let them do this until they learn on their own with a bigger pig?
Both pups are females they are 40 lbs and are BMC/Boxer cross
Here are some pics of the pups first one is Button the 2nd one is Thumper

Being that they are BMC/Boxer, they may just be straight catch no matter what you do.  Some BMC's are straight catch dogs and I have heard of plenty of people using Boxers as catchdogs.  If you want bay dogs, you might want to try a little different bred dog.  If you cant use that pair of dogs, send them my way, I have been looking for a good set of young catchdogs.  SERIOUSLY.   Smiley

Try you about a 120 pound sow and see if she hands them there tail, that may teach them to stand back and bay but maybe not

Yeah, hopefully I can find someone close with a baypen so I can put them on a bigger hog.
The only thing im afraid of is that they get scared from being hit instead of learning to stand back.
Would yall ever let some pups kill a piglet to let it get set in their brain that they hate pigs before you move them up to a larger hog?

I hope they will be more than catch dogs. They are always sniffing and have their nose down to the trail when running.
I will keep yall posted.
Thanks

Where are you located at? Some dogs just take time as far as backing up and baying, some need to be knocked around once or twice and some will always be all catch. I would put them in with a bigger pig and see what they will do then.

Be careful with your training sessions and be careful with your posts! Find a fellow hunter that you might tag along with to train your pups in stages. I am sure you are excited about your pups and we are excited with you and look forward to hearing thier progress, but maybe shareing ALL the details is a bad idea in an open forum. I know you said you were new to the sport and we are all glad to have you. there are alot of good guys on this forum and Im sure some in your area would be more than glad to partner up with you. There are some do's and dont's to learn that will help all of us in the long run Wink welcome to ETHD friend

Being that young I would wait awhile for training, You know that they are interested in pigs so that is a good thing. Id wait a month or longer and put them in one at a time with a bigger hog. I have 2 male BMC that are 6 months old now and they bay at a hog just fine by themselfs but want to catch together. I have been working them with a 16 month pup of mine now that likes to bay tight and grab ass on a runner, but only work one of the younger pups with him at a time.
