Disclaimer: this is in no way a "my cur dog catches better than any bulldog" thread.

I was looking at the pics of the ABs on the AB thread, and one of bryant's photos shows a bulldog in a truck with a couple of curs. The big catahoula bitch in the photo was one of the hardest catching curs I have ever seen. Got me to thinking about how many curs out there are straight catch and won't bay for anything. We had the big cat bitch in her later years, and had a mountain cur who was bad to the bone.

Cheers

I bet it depends on how gritty the dog is and how bad to the bone he is or wants to be  Grin

That big catahoula bitch in bryant's photo needed a breakstick. She was all catch, no bay, and you just about couldn't get her off. Neat dog with a lot of heart.

I've got 3 right now that range from 10 months to 1 yr 4 months old.  They all as of now are straight catch and do require a breakstick.  Not sure if they'll grow out of is as they're still puppies but are really hard dogs as of now.

Mandy, thank you for giving her props....she was good dog for whay she was,I called her a rough cur dog but since learning on the www. I guess she was a RCD Huh?  In her younger days she would find and bay till I got there and either catch when she heard me comming or when told to and when she caught she was caught as good as any bulldog as you saw your self. Funny thing how I got her,my wife saw a aussie/heller cross pup of my cousins and wanted a dog like it (merle).....no way for me lol so I said how bout a catahoula (same color) and something I could use  Wink  I had yella dogs at the time and picked up a news papper and found some cats for sale and went to look and bought her for 300 bucks as a pup,she would catch hard at 6 m/o and never stopped. She was a special dog to me and one of my old favorites, her and Cliffords mom Lea could catch most any hog together and were fun to hunt as back then I had alot more time and places to hunt.

Thanks again Mandy for thinking of her. Skoal and BigO had a big ole yella BMC who he said would catch just like a bull dog too.

Here are some pics of her, don't have many w/ hogs as I was slow to the digital cam thing and the web, most of my pics of her working young was w/ 35 mil and I have a brand new printer/scanner/coppier that serves as a place for my lap top to sit on can't get the scan thing down... Undecided

Here are some pics of her and Leah (cliffords mom)

One of the best catch dogs I ever had was a double registered Catahoula named Ringo. Color and eyes a lot like UNDERDOG's Kitty.

Ringo was straight catch, no bark, no hunt and no break stick required. Released on command and waited for me to tie a hog after the other dogs rolled out. He would even stay with me wile I tied a hog when the other dogs would bay another close by but he didnt like it. He would shake and whimper but stayed put until I told him to go catchem another one! He stayed behind my horse until the dogs bayed and then he would move up beside me waiting for me to send him in.

I make him sound special because he was and I didnt have much to do with it to be honest. I dont remember teaching that dog anything other than basic obedience!

I have been looking for another one like him ever since!

Deon, he was the biggest catahoula I have seen yet and would catch any hog turned loose on.  Caught some good rank hogs behind him and always had to choke him off.  If it was a real big hog you might hear a bark or two but it was just a ploy to fool the hog till he got the right angle on him.  Chris W owned him and I know several folks got to catch hogs behind him.  I have a pic of him I will add later.

I used to own a big yellow male that was a catchy dude.  He would bay until another dog got there then it was all catch after that.  I'm a little on edge going in a good hog that is only caught by curs but when this dog was caught, it was caught.

notice the vest on the yellow dog.thats not because she bays hard.she will hunt close by herself or she will go long range with the hounds.she will also honor a bay.the end result is always the same.she hits the ear every time never barks at a hog just barks if she cant get to it to bite it.Butter has stopped and caught alot of hogs for me.shes "supposed to be" 7/8 bmc 1/8 kemmer idk.and idc
