well I took him to a bay pen just so he could see the pigs and as soon as he seen them he wanted to get at them ,but would his teeth be fully set at a year old? or should i let him catch now?

I wouldn't start catching with him in the woods until he's a year old and his teeth are set. But you can start him now in controlled situations to get him catching.

The way we do it is to make sure that the first hog you do put him on, make sure he can catch it .. Dont bust his confidence on the first hog..9 out of 10 times the first time he tries it he wont know where  to catch it at.. Let him run it around until he catches it and then go to him and flipp the hog and pull him off... Put him back on the ear of the hog while the hog is down and let him hold it for a while.  Do this about 4 or 5  times and he should have it down pat after that. Makin em catch is the easy part, then you gotta put a handle on him after that, GOOD LUCK

I have a ten month old gyp that is catching good.  She caught her first solo in the woods two weekends ago and did good. Or you can let him catch with a more experienced dog a few times to build his confidence!

I, like others on here, don't catch with mine til they are at least a year old. I have had this pup I have now for 6 months and have been chomping at the bit to start him, but I have waited til now as he is a yr old now, and i am ready to start him now.....  Grin

x2 starting them is fine as soon as they show the want to or desire in a controlled situation. I like waiting until a yr to use them in the woods but b/c i am not as wise or patiant as mike and others if I have another seasoned bulldog in he woods I will tote mine around tao get them used to crossing creeks, briars and to kow what a bay is then send them in behind the primary cd. Whatever works.......I ust took my 10 mo. old last night to a new spot with vinny's cd and didnt vest her up b/c it was so hot and we were hunting at 4p.m to scout the spot for the fist time in day light. And of coarse the first boar we get on is a dog wrecker with big tusks....thank God it didnt know how to use them we got him legged real quick as well  Afro
