i have a dog i have really wanted to start my breeding with, i have had her for about a year now and she has never came in heat since i have had her. she is about 4 years old now. does hunting her alot have something to do with her not comin in heat? i mean how old can a dog be, and how many times does a dog normally come into heat, i really want to breed her before she gets to old or something happens to her.i read on dog website when you have more than one female dog when one comes in heat the other one normally will as well. so if i find a dog in heat can i put her around that female and she come in heat as well lol. any comments ideas suggestions or stories would help

the vet has this drug i gave a mare one time to bring her in.  it's a little harder to tell on a horse, because there are no physical differences, only monthly attitude change, and my kids' shetland mare was a little s**t ALL THE TIME, so you really couldnt tell.  you might ask your vet about that.

Unless you are in REALLY good with your vet, you will find it hard to get them to administer Lutylaise (SP?) which I think is what JW7964 is referring to.

PG600 (pregnant pig serum) works great though and you can get it on-line. Cost is about $10 per shot and they come in a pack of 5. Just administer one full shot, sub-Q, between the shoulder blades and she will be in heat in 3 to 7 days. That is assuming that she is physically able to come in heat.

Make sure to use the whole shot on one dog. I tried to split one shot between 2 dogs and it didn't work. That was my only failure with the stuff.

Steve is right about the Lutylase. Not many vet will administer the shot to a dog, and I do not know the dosage for a dog either.

Gardner,

where do you live? I have some PG600 at the house in Dripping Springs (West Austin) but I can not ship. It requires refrigeration.

Shawn,

While it is not exactly birth control/ prevention it does cycle the dog. Therefore it will induce the heat cycle for a dog to be bred, or it will cycle an already bred dog and cause it to abort.

We are slowly getting all of our dogs fixed. males and females. Then we have now worries about heat cycles.

Gardner, some times gyps will only come into a full heat cycle once a year regardless of body condition.  Allthough, poor body condition on a gyp can supress the heat cycle.    I have a gyp that is that only comes in once a year and also have a buddy who has a gyp that is that way.  If you said you have had her about 1 year does that mean almost a year or over a year?  If its the first then she may come into heat any time soon.  U might just wait and see what happens.

I had the shot administered to my female last year....She was in within a week, but the breeding did not take.....She went thru a false pregnancy and it was almost a year before she came in naturally after that......I think it kinda messed her up a little......From now on I'll leave it alone and let it happen naturally.......
