OK the camera adds ten pounds. So how much does a dog add? I guessed about the weight of a hog. Later someone there told me I was a little off. More like a lot off. Like 70 to 100 lbs off. I know I try to be honest and would not exaggerate on purpose. So I am not talking about fudging. But how much have you honestly been off?

Are you talking about guessing the weight of a hog?  If so I've been close I raise show pigs for years.

Photos are tricky, no-one can tell you you are off on your own photo, now if you guessed way off on someone elses photo thats not surprising as I said before photos are tricky!

If you are talking about weights on animals, its kinda like judging, you have to weight a few different body types and get some practice in. different muscle type, body, types and bone structres are all gonna factor, is the body length long and narrow, short and thick, thick boned or petite.

I have dogs in my own yard that are same height and length that will be a good 20 lbs difference.

The same applies to hog weights, body length and girth vary alot from hog to hog and can throw you way off if you have not practiced by putting many on an accurate scale, but I think its a fun to get everybodys guess before revealing the scaled weight.

I can guess the weight of show pigs within a few pounds every time, but when it comes to the wild ones I still suck at it. I am getting closer these days but I have missed up to 30 pounds both ways before.

I like to weigh the big ones so I dont feel like an idiot when someone calls BS on my guess work.  Wink
I've had people that have helped me drag them and load them and still be off over 100 pounds!

Check it out.  Grin

Sorry my question was not real clear. I am still a little off after surgery. I was asking about being off on the hog's weight. When everything is going on that hog looks huge. I do my best but I aint got one right yet! I am going to have to carry a scale. Huh?

Dub, when the hog is standing and fighting he will look way bigger, you see a hog running across a clearing he will have his back arched an they look taller, when a hog rubs a tree/post the arch their backs, when the are mad/challenging they raise their mane/ hackles and look taller, but once they are dead ,or tied on the ground they don't look as big. You can pose one for the cameras and depending on the angle of the picture and the camera person can add 50+ just by knowingh how to put the right angle on it. put practicing with a scale and making a point to look at the girth and lenghth and condition of the hog is the only way to get good as guessing the hogs weight.

I thought this hog was 260, 275# max...scale said I was wrong.  310#

We weigh a good number of hogs, and always call our weight beforehand. Some of them can be misleading.  Long bodied hogs can really throw you.  Ask a deer hunter what he weighs, and he'll tell you 450-500#. Grin

I am no good at it. When I guess I always guessed way to much. So now if I think one ways say 250 I usually just say 200. But still usually wrong. I have seen lots of folks call a 100 pound hog a 200 pounder.

They look big when they are up fighting... on this one you can tell he is bowed up and has his mane stood on end... he ended up 353lbs on scales
