Now this is not about anybody on this board but is about none experienced people wanting to go hog hunting with myself to help out. Let me say I only hunt with very few people because we have hunted together now for a long time and I can trust them to shoot over my dogs and just know if something does happen it will not happen out of pure ignorance!
I don't get to hunt a whole lot anymore like I use to six , seven days a week because the two Buddy's I hunt with have jobs and it is hard to get everything together on certain days when they are off we just go when we can now and plus I lost my big time friend and great hog hunter that don't hunt much no more due to illness he just cant do it much no more .
Anyway I got a few other friends one that is a farmer that owns a bunch of land that wants me out there every chance I get seems like and then some well I told him the deal man I just cant hardly get my people on the same page as far as being off anyway he says I will go with you and help you out but he has no ideal what he is getting into there is no way this man is gonna get behind a pack of dogs on a bad bad boar that runs and walk threw 10 foot blood weeds and cross creeks and climb hills to get to bayed dogs just no way and he don't understand this is what this consist of . He thinks the dogs just find the hog bay him and its over he don't understand all the do's and don'ts. There is just no way he would be able to do it I know him personally.
Then I got another buddy who really fits the hog dog mold but he is one of them know it all's that you cant tell a damn thing . He wants to carry a 300 Win Mag to a dog bay and shoot over the top of your dogs talking about O you know am not gonna shoot your dogs ahahhahahahahaahahahah! Ain't no way in hell this guy is going to a bay of mine with a 300 Win Mag plus I had took him once before and he had what he called a hog finding machine and this sucker chased everything but a hog up and down creeks till finally I had to tell him either put the dog up are I will put mine up cant have this going on gonna ruin some dogs if you don't that nearly ended up in a fight and ended with him leaving but we are long time friends and it was over before it started and he still wants to go but his head is still just as hard as it always was.
Then I have another buddy that wants to go but he has had one heart attack and is not in very good shape and he gets hot real easy done had a couple of heat strokes and there is just no way I can do that .
All the rest are young boys that I might end up taking and trying to break in.
People and the general public just do not realize just how hard a sport this is both on dogs and humans. You just don't jump on a four wheeler go to a bay and its over a thousand things can go wrong and in a hurry and you have got to know who ever is with you, you can depend on . I don't mind taking a new-by as long as one of my Buddy's I hunt with are with me but just taking a new-b and me by myself I just done got to damn ole for that .
Most the time we are gonna end up getting on a bad bad boar that is gonna run us for a while till we can shut him down and that may be two three miles and I just done got to were am just not gonna do it by myself any more so some how we gonna have to get some young guys broke in around my area !

One thing you can do is you can offer yourself for guided hunts near show locations. So people who have bulldogs, dogos etc etc can set up with you to go out. you could have your do's/dont's included in the show information for guided hunts and make it so people have to arrange it ahead of time, like mabe two days before the show. That way you dont waste your time and you can iron out issues like drinking on hunts, shooting around your dogs, proper attire, types of dogs you will or will not have them bring etc etc. Some people will be local and some won't but it will spread the word on hunting, build interest and relationaships.

Take some young kiddos that are WANTING to learn and hunt, you will be suprised what you will get... Just be sure from day 1 you make them help load and unload and collor and even feed and water when the hunt is done. That will be more appreciative than a buddy that thinks they know it all and dont want his friend telling him..

YOU COULD JUST CATCH THE PIGS AND THEN YOU WOULDNT HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT YOUR DOGS GETTING SHOT. JUST FLIP EM AND CUT THE PIGS THROAT.
BUT I FEEL ALL OF YALLS FRUSTRATION. I REMEMBER WHEN I FIRST STARTED AND I ACTUALLY WANTED TO HELP WITH ALL THE LOADING AND UNLOADING. I WAS JUST SO DAMN EAGAR TO LEARN EVERYTHING I COULD. I PROBABLY ASKED A MILLION QUESTIONS. BUT AT THE SAME TIME THE GUYS THAT FIRST GOT ME INTO IT MADE ME START OFF IN A PEN TO GET ME COMFORTABLE WITH THE DOGS AND PIGS RUNNONG AROUND SO YOU MIGHT WANNA TRY THAT SO YOU CAN AT LEAST KEEP IT IN A SEMI CONTROLLED ENVIRONMENT.

Yeah that loading, unloading dogs, wheeler then getting all the stuff together tracking system, collars on dogs vest on dogs. Thats a dat blame job for one person speicaly if you are the one with all the dogs and equipment. Then you got dogs that may get hurt, dogs that may get lost out of range , its a chore I agree any youngster that you invite should be involved in the whole ordeal not just the fun parts.

I think.... and I maybe wrong but when you take and break in "Newbies" alot of them have a big game face on going into the bay but when the scene gets rough alot of folks freeze up and then you gotta shove them out of the way and take care of business yourself anyway. Or they have trouble understanding that when the "its time to go, its time to go" and you gotta get in there and take care of business its not like being able to explain and point or take someone by the hand and show them, on a smaller hog is one thing but a boar thrashing, is another, no time to explain details, you need to know you have somebody that will by right beside you or behind you to grab a leg or grab the back of your shirt to keep you from falling into the hog.
I know I am slow and I have gotten to a catch and had to shove grown frozen men twice my size out of the way to leg a hog that my dog was holding, and thats not a good feeling knowing they are thinking about calling 911 when you are needing to take care of business. I am slower now than I was so I dern sure want to know who is going to my dogs, that they will follow through when they get there. once my catch dog is loose there better not be any "Whoa" in the hunting buddies.

I really like to take people who have never hunted hogs with dogs. Its fun to see their reactions to everything. Since you really only need one other person there to help out, we let the new people jump in if they want to or stand back and watch. It doesn't take long before they get the idea of what to do. Or to figure out if it just isn't their cup of tea. But then again, I don't take it all too seriously. Its just something fun to do in my book. I like the adrenaline rush.

uglydog i understand what your talking about freezing and all, but everyone has to start somewhere. if you got some youngins with you, you have to teach them. yeah you may start out doing all the work on the hogs but the more they go the better they will get. each one has to teach one. this hog hunting thing is really funny. i mean i know of more people that are willing to take someone bird hunting or coonhunting and its no big deal, but this hog hunting thing it's like we don't like bringing people in because they don't "know" what to do. most people don't like to bring pups or just started dogs and such. well if no one is willing to take the time to teach someone and help them to train up a pup then how do we expect to pass this on to the next generation?
i would like to think that my boys will take up hog hunting the older they get but that isn't a given. i like taking young kids that might not know a dang thing. its fun to see them freeze up that first time, cause they think this is a cake walk..lol. after that they don't freeze anymore or they decide this aint for them..lol. most people on here are real good about giving their knowledge out but most aren't real willing to take people out with them. a lot of that i know comes from people stealing land or going back and poaching it, etc. maybe i'm just a big hearted kind of guy but i very rarely tell people no when they want to go on my place. cause the landowner doesn't want me to bring in too many people i don't really put it out there but i like going with different people. i like to see how my dogs measure up with theirs and vice versa. i like putting my dogs in new areas to see how they respond. and above all i like taking young people so i can give them that bug and keep this hog hunting thing we all love going. i just think it takes laying down the rules to the hutn and letting them know waht you expect of them during the hunt after the hunt and such..

I think Uglydog is right. I don't mind taken new person are a newy-b but you better be dang sure you got a good hunting buddy you can depend on if something does go wrong to help back u up ! I have been in that spot were a person freezes and you are left to defend for yourself and it is no fun it will get your hurt bad and it almost done me in , that is why I will not take them a new person unless I got a experinced buddy with me . When they freeze in the line of fire is when somebody will get hurt and like uglydog said there is no time to explain, no time to show them this are that like she said its go time and you got to get it done are be sewing up some dogs and worse putting them n the ground are sewing your on self up . Like I said this is why I will not take a new-b unless I got a experinced hunting buddy with me then the new-b can sit back and soak it all in and decide if this is for him are not . Lots think it is till its time to grab a leg jump in and do what you got to do to save your dog.

Amen sister... newbies better be real good at listening to directions if they want to hunt with me twice... I lean toward the ones that appreciate the dogs.... some new guys are all about the hog... I don't care about the hogs, just helping my dogs get through it... A person shows me he's interested in the wellfare of my dogs, he's in like flyn. (What the hell is flyn anyways.... )

Newbie is a newbie he is going to freeze up. Thing is what is the veteran hunter going to do and say to regain the faith of the troops. Man I remember my 1st hunt about 30 yrs ago and they told me to put my knee on sides of the hogs neck. We have all been there, you are going to have to take 2 or 3 at a time and cull through the crap before you get a couple of good ones. No different than starting puppies.
