I picked up a dog from a young man which looked like it had been snake bitten on its front leg. I asked the guy about it and he said it doesn't bother the dog and its been like that for about 6 months. The leg looks like a snake bite as it looks rotted out from right above the foot and goes up about 7 to 8 inches. I have been giving him penicillen daily along with some dex, blue wound dressing and peroxide. The leg is usually slightly scabbed over but every few days it looks like a fresh wound which I'm afraid is going to get infected. Any suggestions would be great

Try flushing it every day for 5 or 10 minutes with a water hose. Our vet had us do that to a horse with a big open wound like that, works great... heals nicely from the inside out.

Stop with the peroxide.   It kills new skin cells.

Good chance it is a spider bite.  Some dogs are pretty alergic to spiders and that will happen to them.  Only know this because a cousin had a bird dog that was bitten by a spider and that sounds exactly what happened to her.  He was flushing it with something but dont know what it was.  It took her a few months to recover and then hair never did grow back right in that one spot.  The water will probally do the best because of flushin out dead cells and letting the new grow.

what snatcher said is 100% right, peroxide actually reverses the healing process by killing tissue that is infected, there is some stuff that u can most likely find in any feed store. I get mine from tractor supply its called (cut and heal) or something very close to that, it stinks but it works damn good, anytime i have a dog cut up i apply a good amount of it to the dog before sewing him up and it really helps. just be careful because it burns like hell.......ive gotten it in cuts on my fingers and believe me it feels the same to the dog so make sure someone is holdin em down........good luck and i hope the dog gets better

Glen, if all that don't work. take a few cc's of Pen Aqueous, the cheap refrigerated penacillin, mix with a few cc's of betadine let it warm to room temperature and sqirt topicaly in the wound daily. You should know in about3 days if it is creating "fresh tissue growth" nice pink color, if it is working keep doing it until it heals completly

Thanks Krystal, it seems to be working there.
