I have bought a good many horse at havard probally way more than I should have!!Remeber a good horse is almost like a good dog!!Its hard to say why they are saleing the horse some just horse trade and some just need to get them off there hands!! Everyone that works at that auction is a horse trader and there are alot of horse's there that never sale but they say they do so they can keep there average up!! It is a real nice place to pick up some young horse!! But rideing horse's well I could tell you stories that go on at Havard all night!!The only difference at Havard and a Sat. night sale is there is more money envolved!! I have been there right next to all them!! I even bought horse's with some of them!!All I ever wanted was the colts they bought the broke horse and could not tell you anything about them!! They drive around to sale after sale putting horse's togather for Havard!! You better watch them they will carry them bids on you to!! cward... You are right about them carrying bids! I have seen that on several occasions and people just go with it. You have got to be on top of your game if your bidding. We have bought some really nice colts from this sale, but never bought anything over two years old. As far as horses not being POed, it's kind if funny to see a production sale with no horses being POed, but they are still at the ranch and offerd for sale the next year!!

Hey, speakin of Cutting Horses, we (the industry) sure enough lost a good one yesterday. He truly was a legend. I'm proud to own a great-granddaughter.
RIP Smart Little Lena 1979-2010
well i shure didnt know Smart Little Lena had died. that horse shure made his mark in the horse industry. i have a few of them Smart little Lena horses standing around my place.. dud i realized right quick i did not have enough money to play with them cutting horse boys , but i have rode alot of nice cutters, most of my stallions over the years were either trained cutters or ncha money earners. i love to ride a good cutting horse, but most of the top notch cutters arnt worth a darn to ride in the pasture or for pleasure. i still like a good solid ranch horse for an all around horse.

All of is are worked on cattle both in a pen and on ranches. Hes here in Florida but knows and has worked in texas, montana, kentucy etc. If you want his email address just shoot me a pm he may have the answers your looking for. heres his website.. Not much info on it but hes a cowboy and a dog man not a computer guy. coysmithcowhorses.com

My grandpa never took a horse to any show. He would call those people with all the fancy stuff just plain fools. I do not really want to get him into shows. I am not saying he won't want to, but he will make that call. I think he would rather move cattle than do show stuff. I guess when looking at a horse for sale and it shows winnings and no price that means I can't afford it. There ain't no king in this country despite what Obama thinks. So I will have to let my boy learn cutting redneck style!

Dub, You might look into Team/ Ranch Sorting. Plenty of fun and there are weekly sortings all over the place. I used to put them on twice a month here in LaPorte and haul out to Cryin Coyote in Waller on Wednesday nights. I bet I can think of a dozen places in the Houston area that are now holding weekly sortings. It won't break the bank, and most of all it's pretty fun. If I am not mistaken, Craig won a pretty high ranking national title in sorting a few years back. I might haul out to this place this evening just to play around. They have two pens setup every Wednesday evening. http://www.cherrycreekequestriancenter.com/

Yup...the Cutting Horse Industry lost a good one the other day!! Quarter Horse News Sad news. First NCHA Triple Crown Champion Smart Little Lena suffered a stroke today. So that he did not suffer, he was humanely euthanized. He was put to sleep at 11 a.m., Aug. 30, 2010. Smart Little Lena will be cremated and his ashes reside in his trophy case at the Tommy Manion Ranch. http://www.quarterhorsenews.com/index.php/cutting/cutting-outside-the-pen/9797-smart-little-lena-euthanized.htmlRode cutting horses for a few years, helped my dad train a few too. Ours all had to work both in an arena and on a working cow/calf ranch in the northeast panhandle of Texas. We never had any of those TOP Winners but we sure had fun working, riding, and competing in the smaller area shows. Those would be a good place to start out at....they usually dont have outragious entry fees and they offer classes for beginners. Some of the ones around there even had a ranch cutter class - where picking up and reining your horse didn't count off a point for each time and only beginners were allowed to enter. Not sure this is still being offered now but it was a cool class to watch as well. I always likened it to ballet. Krystal - all that whooping and hollering is a good thing!! I know it can be distracting to some that have never been around it much - but when you are riding one and have a good run going and all the turnback help and the crowd is getting into it - this tells you that you are racking up the points!! It also is used as a way to get the judge/judges to look up from tallying and watch - you just want to hope it continues as a good run and doesn't go south, as they can do quickly!!!
