Think you have some great answers and this link is directed towards a little different type of herding dog but there is some usefull information in it, I think for you. Since you have a aussie in your sig you may already know about it.

Craig,

I am not for hire ,  Though I guess I could hitch a ride with Rod next time you are working them Wink

I actually have a few reasons for wanting to start some dogs on cattle...

**** Mike, Matt, Mandi and I all have young pups that need time in the woods. Being as we often hunt together, it will be hard for me to get my pups started on hogs, as I don't want to hunt with a lot of pups on the ground, yet I want my pups to get plenty of exposure. I have access to cattle everyday of the week, and I feel like I might be better off starting them on cattle first, then if I want, put them on hogs later.

**** Been helping a friend lately, his place is about 10 minutes from the Flatonia ranch. It's only about 1200 acres, but keeping the cattle from stringing out with 3 riders, and no dogs seems to put a lot more wear on the horses than necessary. I think a couple dogs up front would be really beneficial.

**** Lastly,  I am about to start buying F1 Braford heifers, and would like to have some dogs ready to work when the need arises. I don't think I will be playing on your level anytime soon, but I have some plans in the works. Probably the worst time in history to be buying, but what the hell, I don't too often follow conventional thinking anyway Grin

I think you will be miles ahead with what you have in mind Chris. I have always been a little jealous of cowboys for nothing else than the time they get to spend with their dogs. They may even be better hog dogs for it.
I will be very interested in hearing your opinion on these dogs after you’ve got them well started and using on hogs.

Chris,  i would save a couple back just for cows only.  sounds like you could use some cow dogs. cow dogs shure make gathering alot easier.

i know most guys wont put there dogs with a dog they think might get on cows  Undecided.

No chance!  I declare this thread is exclusive.  A NO hound zone. Evil
