I just took a couple Catahoula gyps to get spade this morning. The youngster has a naval hernia so it is recommended not to breed her anyways. Her dam is a jam up dog that seems to have just raised a fine litter (11 pups that all lived) and is in heat again. The litter that she had came from a hunt and she showed absolutely no sign of being in heat. She got bred to a good dog but not the dog that I would have chosen for her to breed. I need her hunting not raising pups. I have been told there is no such thing as a morning after shot by my vet. I would like to hear your thoughts on the matter. Thanks...

I know my vet will give a shot that terminates the pregnancy but it has to be givin to the dog within 72 hours of being bred. I don't know how effective it is but I do know there is a shot that can be givin.

I asked about the shot at 2 different vets and they both told me there was no such thing. I am not disputing anyone's word at all, but I did ask. Maybe it is a business deal more $$$ for them by spading or I simply did not ask the right vet? Thanks...

Bennie, there is such a thing....don't know the time limits but it does exist. One thing I was told and found to be true when I did it is the gyp will not come back in for a year or two possible...that is one side effect from it.

Bryant,
Send me some info on a vet in our area for future use if needed. I will not be needing it for a while, Belle and Libby are "fixed" by know. No regrets, although I really like the way that Belle hunts and Libby is a momma's girl so she should be a good one too. Thanks for the info everyone....

Hey y'all, the shot is called lutalace. The way it works is it brings them right back into full blown heat, so they don't take. The two down sides to that are a) it can cause permanent sterilization and/or b) they can (like underdog said) they can not come back in for a long time. The best thing to do is to just let her have the pups, and if you really don't want them, or don't need them, as soon as they are born, get a wash cloth and a can of ether, soak the washcloth with the ether, and hold it over the pups face for bout 10-15 mins. night night and bye bye puppy, humanely.

Benny, the lutalace does work have used it several times. It has thrown their cycle off.
It the same drug they use to bring mares into heat. I think you are better off Spaying the dog if you don't want pups, in the long run I think you will be happier, or atleast I am.

Be sure if you use the shot, that you keep her away from males for a few weeks, as in my experience the heat cycle lasted way longer after the shot was given then even what I was told it will.

Thanks for the info gals and guys... I just picked the girls up from getting fixed. They're are acting like nothing happened, they are wanting to play. They are getting to spend the day in the house per my wife. I will file the name of the shot in case I need it down the road.

One more question for those of you that have gyps fixed, did they get fat? I have only spade 2 hunting gyps before and one of the 2 got really fat on a very low intake diet. Thanks...

My lizzie dog is spayed, and even though she is a naturally fatso she is in great shape now. I noticed no difference in her weight before or after spaying her. We also run neutered catch dogs. No difference in catching drive or performance at all. The biggest difference is that when we haul our dogs, we can put them all in a compartment of the stock trailer together with no bickering.
