How do you get properties to hunt? I know not everyone here has enough money to buy property to hog dog on... So this question is aimed at the everday average po-boy, that loves to hog hunt.
I've asked some people on ETHDs if I could tag along, but no ones offered to let me in, not that its a big deal, but everyone "outside" of the hog hunting life strongly disapproves of hog dogging.
So my question is..... How do you get lined up with LEGAL land to hunt??? I stress legal because I use to hunt with some ol' boys that knew no boundries, a fence meant, "get the cutters".
Thanks for any feedback!

Man, I hunt places that I lease for cow pasture and usually that leads to getting to know the neighbors and they usually have an intense dislike for hogs. I just know people in the community and don't usually have to ask, just let people know that I hunt and they usually offer to let me hunt their places. It's all about knowing landowners and letting them know you hunt without trying to force your way in. When they feel like you're doing them a favor it's all good! A few pounds of sausage and deer meat every year or a whole hog every once in a while along with good treatment and respect of their land makes for a good long term relationship. If they like you they will refer you to other landowners who have a hog problem.

That's good info Levi, thanks, but most people i've talked to have a bad taste about hog hunters, i.e. lease managers and property owners. I can understand why, cuz I've known some that have no respect for people and their property, throwing trash everywhere and cutting fences wont get you far, and when one does it; it ruins it for all the good folks.
Heck, I'm not a big time hog hunter. Just got a few pups, all around a year old, but I'm ready to start trying to train them. I've got a small bay pen but dont wanna put em in there to much; I've heard it can ruin them.

invite deer hunters, that you know have deer leases with hogs, on a hunt with you. most of them get hooked the first time, if you catch a hog. then they start calling you everytime they get a hog on camera. before you know it you have more places to hunt than you can manage. all it takes is for you to get a few people hooked and then word of mouth.

Thanks catch n tie!
All nighters are fine by me. Do you ever make your way down around the Houston area? I live about 40 miles North of Houston, but dont mind traveling a little if it'll get me on some pork. My dogs are young, and only been hunting a couple times, I know one of my gyps will honor a bay, and has found one on her own once, but she didnt stick with it. I figure they will hang pretty close til they understand why they are out there. I have a male and female BMC and a male APB, they look like family pets as much as they lay up though. I've been on many hunts with friends, but as soon as I got some pups and started setting up, they quit on me. I've just been letting them play in a bay pen once in a while. I've got my own transportation, gear and rope; just no where to put it yet. I know a lot of folks aint hog doggin right now cus its deer season. I hunt white tail too, but I'd much rather be out in the briers grabbing a wild beast. AINT NOTHING LIKE IT!!!

no i dont ever go near houston case.
im going to tell ya that dog hunting is probably the most competative sport there is. it brings out the worst in SOME people. ive got a buddy that ive been friends with since elementary school. im 29 now, so a long time. we got into hog doggin at the same time, bought some dogs and started hunting together. that lasted a couple of months cause we had the same hunting land. he wasnt as committed as i was so he wasnt alway willing to go. when i started catching " his " hogs the whole hunting partner thing busted wide open. i became his competator. to this day, he'll get a call by someone wanting him to come help with their hog problem and it would be too far of a drive for him. but be down the road from my house. wont even give them my number. cause he doesnt want me catching the hogs. but will call me and tell me about the place he had to turn down. its sad to say your buddies might have seen you as competition once they saw you starting to get your own pack together.

That's a sad deal catch... My buddies was a different kind of thing. The ones I was close to got out all together, and the others I knew only through the guys that got out. But I have seen the competition side of things that your talking about. I've seen guys just about fist fight over who's dogs got to the bay first, senseless pride, how could one know. I guess with GPS you can tell, but we all ran telemetry.
Maybe we can hook-up sometime and chase one down, I do appreciate the invite, and if I get some places around here or between us I'll return the hospitality. Thanks!

Bradley, If I get some places lined-out I'll invite you down. Maybe we can help each other out with different scenery once in a while.

Gottagetem,
What type of public land are you talking about? National Forest? They shut that down this year.

Thanks M Bennet! I appreciate the offer, and the advise. I'll see what I can do about getting up to Decatur. I was just talking to my wife and she said it would be nice to get out of town for a weekend. How lucky can a guy get, she wants to get away for the weekend so I can go hog dogging. :-)

I hear ya C-N-T! Sometimes I feel lucky; then others I feel cursed. I got a boy that's seven and he's itching to go, and I'll take em as soon as I find some good folks to let him be around, or find my own places. He's even got two little pups he takes care of, a little bmc female (lilly) and a cat male (buck), both of them are about two months old, so there a handful. And he's learning a little responsibility.
I appreciate everyone's feedback here. Thanks Guys!

Thats awesome catch! I hear fishing is great in Toledo Bend. And I definitly agree with you on getting them kids away from video games. I got a big ol' hole in my big screen right now from my son and the neighbor kid playing bowling on the WII last weekend, the remote slipped out of his hand, I guess he was really getting into it. Hope he bowled a strike...
I appreciate the invite, and look forward to meeting you.
