Anyone using pure Catahoulas on hogs and cattle. I have read of people having dogs they could put on either cattle or hogs by command, does anyone on here have or know of someone that has pure Cats for this ? Thanks, Lee

Some of the cowboys that I hunt with use them on both, but I dont know of any breeders of registered dogs that do both with them.

Thats pretty common around here. Any good cur should be able to do both its just a matter of putting a solid handle on the dog so you can pull it off. Some guys have cowdogs they hunt hogs with occasionally, someguys have hog dogs they can pen cows with if need be. I have a couple that I can use on cattle or hogs, but I dont put them on cows much at all. They will work cattle only when I sick' them on the cows, but they will hunt hogs regardless if I want them to or not. So if they find hot sign might end up baying hogs instead of getting the cows penned. Mine are not Catahoulas though just working Cur dogs.

A good friend of mine in Madisonville has a cat that he works both ways. This dog will find and bay cattle first. If he calls them off the cattle, the dog goes to hunting hogs. I have never seen him hit hogs first when there are cattle around though.

I have a lacy that will work both. After about a couple hours of hunting and no pigs he will take out his frustration on the first cow he sees.

I use mine both ways all the time.
I will start my young dogs on pigs, then switch them to cattle when they are fast enough to not get outrun by a cow. I will use them on cattle untill they handle like I want and they have had hours and hours of practice holding a bay on cattle. Then I will start them back on hogs and will be able to use them either way as needed.
The great benifit to working cattle with young dogs(1 to 2 yrs) is they get more practice holding a bay on cattle than they will ever get on hogs. This improves their bay style and handle as well. they learn to listen even in the heat of battle so to speak.
I believe it is great training even for a dog that will end up being a straight hog dog.
Any more questions let me know.
