Let it be a puppy. when it matures then start training it.  Dont let it catch though til 6-12 months, gotta let the teeth set.  My bulldog is just now a year, and he aint close to be mature enough to be started..  If i needed a catch dog NOW id have just found one a few years old, i wanted one I knew so i got a puppy to raise the way i wanted.. something you gotta take into account.. dont rush a pup.. x2 gotta let em mature first,  if a pup gets hurt first time in they have a different mind set than an adult dog, might ruin him

I will let them see pigs at 6mths of age or so, but not start letting them catch anything hard or big until a yr old. When I start taking them out at a yr they have two finished experianced catchdogs there with them.

I'm for sure no expert, but until he is old enough and mature enough to catch theres still other things you can work with him on. For example, obedience. I like a dog that is goin to follow my orders no matter the situation. I start working with my pups around 6 weeks old learning how to sit...but always short sessions. Then go from there: come here, walking on a leash and  so on. JMO

I let all my dogs (catch and bay dogs) run loose till i start findin too many dead animals in my yard. Expecially the neighbors cats. This usually happens around the 8 month old. then ill put em on the chain till they are 10 months old. then work em in the pen to see if they will catch. But catch dogs jaws dont completely form till they are 18 months. thats when i start um in the woods. This has been workin fer me purdy good.
