I have been trying to be a hog hunter for about one year now. At last years TDHA hunt I didnt have anything. I showed up just to meet people and hopefully be able to tag along on some hunts.
Now I have all the tools required for hunting (wheeler, vest, garmin, trailer  etc....) and trying to form my pack. Right now it consist of two dogs. A lacy and a boxer/BMC
I am really happy with my lacy pup. He will be 1 year old this month and this past weekend he caught two 30 pound shoats on his own! I know the size is nothing to be proud of, but I was just really glad to see him do that. He was also at every bay barking his butt off. My other dog 1.5 years old boxer/cur, seemed to pick up the scent at the same time as the main strike dog and ran out 900 yards to catch and hold a 150 pound boar for about 20 minutes before we were able to make it to her. She had help from the other dogs. She got a small cut and didnt let go.

I am very happy with both and happy with my progress so far. I am sure some of yalls dogs are much better by that age, but I am just happy. I went from wanting to fish and work out all t he time, to now all I can think about is chasing hogs!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love watching the dogs work and cant wait to build up my experience and fill my brain with hunting stories..

Thanks to yall I have learned alot from reading the board

Same here....... I use to hunt with my uncles years ago when I was a teen but wasn't really in to it. I got my own stuff about 6 months ago and have my lil herd smashing hogs already. I'm ready to buy some land and get away from the city now.

Awsome man. Sounds like you got the bug alright. 99.9% of it is just stayin in the woods and you will learn the rest by trial and error. Pay attention to the dog first aid posts and have supplies handy with ya. I promise it pays to be a Vietnam field surgeon when chit goes bad out there. Good luck man hope to see ya out there.

Sounds like your doin good man! Me and you are in pretty much the same position. I been after it for quite a bit longer than a year, but I got only two grown "finished" dogs, a good lacy dog and a long range cd as well. I can catch most pigs with just the two of them or even with just the cd. But I hunt with my buddies and their cur dogs most the time as well. Keep up the work man, it's all about haven a good time, and it don't get any more fun than watching dogs really turn into somethin special and learning from experience.

size isnt all that matters... you oughta b proud of yourself and your dogs sounds like yall are on the right track!!!! no better way to get experience than to just go experience it!!! its alot more rewarding to raise and see a pup make a hog dog than it is to just go buy one already trained, keep up the good work and hope you continue to have fun at it thats the main thing (besides being safe) lol

Good for you man,......I know it doesn't seem like it, but each one of us on here was in your shoes sometime or another. Don't sell your young dogs short,....if they're doing what they should and what you want them too, be proud of them and let them know it. We weren't born knowing all this....it takes years to know what you need to to get the job done, but I think you're doing just fine. Good luck.
