I was lucky this year to draw out for an elk tag in the Pecos Wilderness in New Mexico. I hunted and camped out in the Pecos for 6 nights and had a great time. It is definitely Gods country up there. I was lucky enough to take this bull, it is not a trophy but the first elk I ever shot and proud of it. Enjoy the pics.  We were up 10,500 feet at camp up in the clouds  First Elk   |

Any elk in country like that should be considered a trophy. That would be going on my wall for sure
Getting an elk is on my bucket list. Not only would it look good on the wall, but they are so much better tasting than deer. Not to mention the beautiful country you get to enjoy while hunting one. My father and I used to take trips to the mountains of Wyo, CO, or MT every summer, but I havent been in bout 10 yrs. I miss the mountains.
One day I will get around to saving the coin for an out of state elk tag.

they are like 1600 bucks or so, its easier to buy landowner authorizations in this state than apply for the general lottery.

How does that process work in NM? I have relatives in UT and CO, and figure it would cost me 6-800 to hunt there. I didnt say this here, but my uncle in CO said he would let me hunt and get one on his resident tag. But unlike too many people these days, I happen to like following the law. Especially in the current days of violating game laws in one state effecting your rights in other states. I saved too long to get my lifetime liscence in OK to do anything to screw it up, so I am willing to pay. So what is up with the landowner auth that you talk about??

The game and fish department gives land owners (ranchers mostly) authorization tags that they can sell or use themselves to offset the cost of the game grazing on the land. THis is done for some deer, antelope and elk tags, we get three a year for antelope on our ranch and we use them all ourselves as we have horrible luck and defy statistics in the lottery. The land owner will sell them and I have seen bull permits go for as low as 800 but typically 1600-4500 a piece. You can get cow permits much cheaper and they are good if you like the taste of elk, but you can only hold one tag a year for any species.

Been to the 'Land of Enchantment ' several times myself....it never fails to amaze me with it's beauty. Very nice bull you got....congratulations.

Thanks for the comments fellas. It is definitely some beautiful country up there. CritterCatcher- that was some funny stuff about mounting that elk Arrowbar- I appreciate the insight you gave me before the hunt and you are blessed to live in that part of the country but this flatlander was ready to come home after a week in the mountains. I enjoy being able to see fifteen miles away to the next town  Mod93Dirt- We had a group of four to put in for that unit and were lucky enough to draw out. The out of state tag was around $530. If your going to try to draw out it will help if your in a group. Good Luck |
