I have a 7 month old kemmer pup, big for his age at just over 30lbs but built right and long legged. He likes to get rough (play) with the other dogs during exercise time... shows alot of grit and has a good nose. I had him in a pin at 4 months just out of curiosity and got nothing out of him. Same thing at 6 months with a potbelly in a 6x10 kennel, and again this past Sunday. No barking, just running around using his nose while the older dog is baying. Am I expecting to much to soon, or is he just not cut out for it? I planned on keeping him in and out of the pin till this summer then make a decision, but if not I would let him go to a coon or squirrel hunting house and back fill. I dont have enough room on the yard to keep something that isn't gonna work. Training suggestions are welcomed too.

Thanks

give him time he is still pretty young to worry about is he going to work some dogs dont start till there a year old and some not till2 so give him time and i would leave him out of the pen and let him watch the other dogs work and let him tell you when he is ready to start

Now that you say that... My buddy told me to take him out and let him run around the outside of the pin. I just wanted him to see what to do. Thanks buddy

Some pups don't show interest in a pen. Try tying a pig up and hiding it in the woods. Walk him cross it to see if he boogers up on it. If still no go by 8 months plus would seriously rethink his position as a hog dog due to lack of natural gameness. To many pups out there giving 100% and doin it without having to beg them to bay. Some like to wait but I figure that depends on how much your willing to spend on feed to find out if you were feeding a cull the whole time. JMO Hope he turns on for ya bud.

had a RBMC gyp sometime last year got her at 4 months, would NOT do anything....(got trampled)
again at about 6 1/2- 7 months didnt do anything but smell around the pen and yip one time!(trampled again)  Grin

at nine months i threw her in with my YBMC she seen what he was doing she bayed solid!!
( i used a small pig around 70-80 pds. to build confidence up)
took her back to the pin for 2 days straight the third day i dropped her about her 100 yrds from the baypen and made her find the pig on her on using her nose only

started running her with older dogs pretty heavy and now at almost a year, shes turning into a decent dog still got puppy in her but shes produced 3 hogs so far,and will honor a bay not a bad start.

Everyone is right on the money...keep him outside and he will let you know when he's ready. You could also kennel him with a playmate that is showing interest.....its a long shot but give him a try walking into a bay or drag one for him. Some dogs don't work in pens. Even some solid strike dogs won't do much. Either way your answer will only come with age. Good luck!
