This is a complex idea for me to try and wrap my head around because I have not done any intentional breeding before. I have a great dog that I'd like to try and do some breeding with, but I don't know the dog’s history, makeup, or parents. I want to find a good, solid, med-long range, lots of bottom, silent, and leggy female to breed him with… BUT I don’t want to just throw a bunch of mutts! Here is Fred… He is cur x cat x plot cross is all that I know. He will take off, strike a track, and stay with it until you get there; and then he might catch depending on the hog and who is there to help. I would like to put some more size on his offspring and maybe some more volume, but I don’t know what type of bitch to breed him to? Any ideas, tips, or suggestions would be much appreciated.

find a good plott gyp or even an old has been plott female that is good for one more breeding...one of a good line of hog dogs...

I already have plans to breed him to Pistol if shes turns out like I think she will.  Grin Now that I think about it I really dont think I could go wrong crossing him on Soka either!

I'm thinking both... Grin also... If I'm following what I have been reading and trying to learn... If we take Fred and Soka and breed them then cross their pups with the Zig and Soka pups they would be  half bro x half sis... But what screws it up for me is not being able to tell how much of what the pups are after breeding them. (blood % wise) Sad I'd like to do this brother! I think the guys are right... Let's go full plott on the first cross. Grin

I dont know if I would go full Plott since he already has some Plott in him.  The mouth might open up some this is of course if you dont like any kind of open .  Other than that I cant see why not.

If you did half bro x half sister.

It would be a 1/4 your male 1/4 the female you bred to on the top and 1/4 your male on the bottom and a 1/4 the female you bred to on the bottom.  So in other words 50 % your male that is why I like half bro x half sister you can keep 50% your blood with a 1/4 out on the top the female and a 1/4 on the bottom the female again you bred to.

You go full plott and your dog has a 1/4 in him then the pups will be 5/8'a pure Plott see what I mean .  Are if you dog is half plott for some reason then you are looking at a 3/4 full Plott pups .  May take you over the edge with the mouth .

Ryan,  just want you to know I am not telling you not to breed to a pure Plott I am just saying be carefull weigh out everything because you are going to get what you put into those pups one way are another good are bad you will get what you put in them .  It could be a great cross then again it could go South you just never know in a breeding were you dont know excatly what is what.  In a case like that you want every odd in your favor then when you get what you want you can start taking risk are chances.   Just me man .  Again I am not telling you not to breed to a pure Plott just giving you some of the odds.

ryan from what i have heard of fred is, this is he is more cur over cat with a pinch of plott blood in him. you have hunted with both dogs, take chance make a cross and cull when it is needed. a little mouth or a yip here and there only drives the other dogs hog crazy!!!!

if you got to ask f "How to know you have a dog worth breeding, and what gyp to breed it to?"  odds are you dont need to breed  anything   just my two cents  dont mean to sound like an a$$

He is definitely worth breeding in my opinion! He is probably the best dog i have hunted behind hands down. Also I think Jimmy said he came from a litter of dogs that all turned out good so i dont see what it would hurt to try him on a couple of my females.  Grin I would like to breed him to my Pistol dog who is ZIGxSALTY and is 3/4 BMC 1/4 Plott. Her only drawback for me so far is she is semi open on a hot track but will quiet down after she runs for awhile. The main thing I like about her is she is one of the hardest hunting dogs(med to long range) that i have seen with good bottom especially for her age. I really dont see her getting nothing but better with age.  It wont be for awhile tho since she is just a year old and has a lot to show me before I consider breeding her but she seems to have that drive I am looking for but only time will tell. Fred and Soka would also be a good cross that I wouldn't mind trying!  Smiley

Think you might come out better focusing on his proven abilities that you favor rather than attempting to play the % of pure blood game. You already know he has a touch of multiple breeds in him which is no problem but no matter how you cross him your not gonna come up with anything more than a math equation on top of having limited info about his heritage.

Rather than that focus on finding a good gyp of any breed that you prefer that shows favorable proven abilities that will reproduce or add to the traits that you wish to keep.

I have been told to not attempt a cross until I look at a dog and say to myself "man I wish I had ten more just like him or her"  good solid advice.

Sounds like you are confident about your male so just find a similar talented female and find out.

Hope you get twelve more even better. And hope the advice helps. Good luck bud.

Jimmy, I appreciate your input. This is what I need to hear... If you look at him you really can't see the plott in him. I guess its where he gets his bottom. Grin But won't the litter of pups tell more of the tail??? Or will the pure blood of the plott take over... And I'm talking Soka here which is Pocahontas, correct me if I'm wrong Blake. But I think that with us already having ZigXSoka crosses around... And Soka is still around, I think we should cross Fred on in there and see if we can't turn out some keepers to take this a step further.

Here is another question... Since there is already a litter of his pups coming (accident), but to a decent started blue lacy, Pearl... Could we take a Soka x Fred pup and cross it to a pup from Pearl (blue lacy) x Fred if they end up making dogs, and it still be half bro x half sis cross???

I guess this is just a long drawn out planing process... And im just getting started!!! Grin but I want to do it right is why I ask, so thanks for your input. Fred is a really good dog, but I can't take credit for him. Jimmy did a great job with him, and with what Fred already had in his blood he turned out great. Fred x Soka should definately happen... Grin
