when we hunt horse back the my  catch dogs follow behind the horses , Ive seen craig carry a bulldog that was done , but my opinion , tie the horse up and sack it out , if it is high strung , wear it out by jipping it in a round pin to the point it dont want to be stupid , and then sack it out all over its back and body , get it were it dosent bother it then try it with a calm  dog , if the dog is not calm it will probaly go bad ,  let the hose smell the dog first  , Im not a trainer by no means ,  Ive had my pelvis broke in 5 places , guts went threw my throat because of a horse , be careful and good luck , there is alot of true blue cowboys on this board that can give more input

Well i know a cowboy who fixed the issue of the catchdog riding by train himself a catchdog so small he can just put it in his shirt pocket, he says he ain't so much a catch dog as a chit starter  laugh

I have had  a many of horse hunting catch dogs. I have taught a few to ride the saddle. But for the best one's I have owned I_ had a good handle on them to where I could send them on command to go catch. Right now I use a Jack Russell to cat h
He is as handy as they come. In the tdha hunt He caught a boar o over 200 and one over 300. On horses you can ride to the bay so you are able back a little dogs game when He catches.
T Bob when He gets a Holt he's hanging on like an ear ring. The curs will catch with him.

Not to mention he saves a ton on cut vests and stuff, chance just puts him in one of these

I think I've seen JP wear that same sweater vest.

Get a good set of saddle bags and put blocks in each side of it. Run a rope from d ring to d ring with a snap in the middle. The blocks in each side of saddle bags will give cd something to stand on.

I doubt cinder blocks would fit in a saddle bag. Just 4x 6 wood blocks you should be able time get two blocks in each side of the bags.

The best is to have catch dogs trained to follow behind the horse until give commanf
To catch. It would be easier to carry your dog in front of give up some of your saddle to the dog. Carried alot of calves and feet over the front of my horse.

put a shock collar on ur dog take a 10 foot rope an put on him.give him slack and wen he starts to slip off shock him on a low setting and call him to u.if he dont come hit him again and pull him to u.wen he gets to ur side pet him and luv on him.he will learn that wen hes by ur side hes safe from the shock.just do it for a few mins each day so u dont blow his mind.wen its gets to were u cant walk because hes rite under ur feet hes about ready.start walking around ur place each day and let him follow u,if he gets very far away shock him  and make him come back to ur feet.u need to take him horse back around the house to teach him to stay with just ur horse.u mite have to lead him aways the firsttime.i have trained them n a few days and sum take longer.wen u get to a bay u mite need to put a rpoe on him and shock him if he tries to leave.after awhile he will stand beside ur horse till u send him.a foot or horseback im  not leading a catchdog this is how we train all r catchdogs.even if there r 10 horses he will learn to stay with ur horse.if he ever gets to far away burn him.i like mine to nearly b under my horse.
