I got a pit x cur . He has one hell of a nose. We were using him as a walk in catch dog but he just hates it. He want's to be hunting with the curs. We let him hunt a few times and he hunted his but off. He covers a lot of ground quick and thoroughly. I keep a hog in the woods on a small island and some days he winds that hog from 350 yds. away. He will swim a water Lilly infested canal to get to this hog. I would like to just turn him loose with the bay dogs and let him hunt. My son feels that if he gets on a hog and we can't get there in time he will either get cut up good or the hog will break and run and he will follow and we may never see him again. We hunt some rough walking marsh. The dog is miserable being used as a walk in. He wants to hunt. We have this dog and 2 young Cat bay dogs. The pit x cur won't bay, he will catch. I would like any and all opinions as to how we should proceed with this dog.

I'd say just run him with one other dog that'll catch with him, and possibly a super loose baying dog just for another way of tracking to him when he catches. If he wants to hunt let him have at it, my thought is if he goes to getting beat up to bad he'll either learn to back up, and wait to catch til you get there, or at least a couple locater barks to draw some help to him before he catches.

i run a dane x pit and hes the same way , he wont stay on fourwheeler he barks the whole time so i let him run . i use collar and garmin in summer and vest in winter . if your worried about him getting too banged up then you can run a light weight vest .... i use hard core vest they are light and tough ! if you dont want to use a vest then you can always get another rcd for back up . i use rcd and lead in but where i hunt the dogs never get farther than 800 to 900 yards and we hunt off fourwheelers so we can get there pretty quick if need be .
