Years ago I was told of a high protein dog food (28%)and I bought some for my dogs...the first thing I noticed was hair in the dog food... A little research and I found out that some companies that sell cheaper dog foods raise the protein content with ground feathers or hair...they do this to fool the customers into buying the dog food because of the higher protein...Hair is made up of over 90% protein but it is totally un digestible so it goes straight through the dog...
They sometimes do the same thing with other ingredients like calcium...They raise the calcium content with ground up bone but again this ingredient is not digestible but it looks good on the guaranteed analysis...
SO BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU BUY...
if the bag says that it is 100% nutritionally complete for all stages of a dogs life then it is supposed to be that way by law...but just because it say 27% protein does not mean that it is 27% digestible protein...I don't know what the minimum protein is for all stages but it is a lot lower than 27%...
I have a friend that bred his female several times and none of the dogs grew to what I thought some of the litter should of grown up to...I saw lots of hair in one of the dogs poop on the dog that I acquired from him...I had already suspected the dog food that he feeds which is Kroger Old Yeller brand...not saying it is the culprit but I wouldn't feed it...I would move up a notch to at least Retriever from TSC...

Training dogs is not about quantity, it's more about timing, the right situations, and proper guidance...After that it's up to the dog... A hunting dog is born not made...

yeah i remember several years ago someone came out with this cheap generic dog food , plain white bag but advertised high protien and because of the price many people were feeding it . long story short dogs were starving to death with a full belly . it took the many vets that people took their dogs to , to finally discover the problem was the feeds undigestable protien content .

Reuben, in a 4 year period I went through quite a few different feeds. I fed Nutro Natural Choice Lamb & Rice for a while. Dogs were healthy and stools were firm. The problem was their skin was flaky and dry and their hair was very dull. I switched to Purina One Lamb and Rice and their skin improved instantly. Only problem, I couldn't keep weight on them. Started feeding Diamond and that was a disaster. I tried the High Energy and the Diamond Naturals Chicken & Rice. They had more crap in the pens than I ever seen and the pens stunk so bad you couldn't stand it. I didn't know what to try next. All of the above feeds were each tried over several months. I decided to give TSC's Retriever High Protein a try. It's been 7 months and so far so good. Minimal crap, no smell, and the dogs never looked better. Their skin is good, their fur is extremely shiny and they are full of energy. I am also feeding less to maintain their weights. I really had low expectations of the Retriever brand when I started feeding it but it turned out good so far.

TDN total digestible nutrient cattle feed list it but dig feed doesn't. I have tried seems like 20 different feeds, and victor red bag is only one that dogs look good on a month into feeding other feeds Seems like all the rest maybe a couple of dogs will maintain condition, but others will drop off. Last fall I fed the Shawnee for about three months and was pleased, and all the at once they all looked like crap, it was messing something or got a couple of bags from a bad batch. The dogs come back and you can see a difference in week 10 days.
