I have a buddy that will lead a catch dog to the bay and usually cuts him loose around 100yrds, but I myself cut mine loose when there is a solid bay. I drive as close as I can and let them go from the box. I can chalk that up to pure laziness, I'm not gonna lead a dog anywhere. The furthest I can remember is about a mile away, but I'd say most of the time it's between 500-1000 yards with the average leaning toward the middle or a little less of that range. If they can hear them and want to go I let them.
