What i want to know is at what point do you call a line of dogs yours? You had to get them from some one to start with Is it the second generation? 3-4th When do they go from being someone elses blood to being yours? Not just on the papers but on your line?

oh about ten generations that should take you no less than 20 years if done rite lol because all the dogs should be at least two years old and proven before breeding . and thats if the line will hold up to it without any outcrossings along the way . and you've got them all hunting, and looking true to the line . but then again it can be done in a couple of breedings with the right kinda advertisement and bragging lol

You know it's your line when other people refer to em as your dogs, not yourself and not your buddies!
It sure don't happen overnight.

When your selections start having an impact on the dogs your breeding, good or bad, then its yours. I would say three generations.

x2...but starting with a good line of dogs really helps...and give credit where it is due...inbreed at the beginning and select right to purify the line...meaning culling out the bad traits...then linebreed off of the good dogs...your dogs will only be as good as you select...

I'm trying to breed up my own "line" or family of dogs. I would call them my own dogs after a generation cause I'm using dogs from different people and breeding dogs to my specifications. Some people will disagree but I don't care. I don't plan on advertising them or bragging about them either.

hell buddy after one generation they is just a cross off of so and so's dogs that would be just like crossing a walker to a blue tick first generation is just a walker and a blue tick cross . now after a few efforts at line breeding those pups for several generations you start getting a LINE of dogs to start inbreeding with to start to get uniformaty and then a LINE starts to develope . i'm sorry just takes several years to do it right and to truely be able to call it a LINE of dogs . but just my opinions on the matter if it just took one generation or even three [ sorry boys lol ] there would be more lines of dogs than the stars in the sky .

Your own line yes but he also asked about ur own dogs. Maybe I should have been more specific with my answer. A line of dogs would be 2 or 3 generations at least but my own dogs after one generation cause I'm breeding for a different kind of dog with a long term goal in mind.

You can't start a new breed of dog in three generations, that would take many years and generations to do. If three people got dogs from the same man then bred them separate for three generations using their likes and dislikes in the selection process, I guarantee you they each would be different and the guy you got them from won't claim them as his anymore. So, who's line of that particular breed is it.

A new breed of dogs is different than a new line of dogs. In 3 or 4 generations if done right u have a good shot of breeding out undesirable traits. In one breeding u can change the type of dog whether it's good or bad.
