I wonder if all of that skunk spray messes with their ability to smell.

I have a dog whose vice is skunks. Its not that nobody has tried, she's just hard headed about it. Come to think of it, some of the better dogs we've ever hunted with had skunk issues that couldn't be broken. It gets you thinking anyway.

Cheers

I've got one that we've tried everything on, she'll do good for a while... but always relapses. Funny thing is, she never gets sprayed, but bays one like a champ.

I have a male dog that over the last three hunts has developed a taste for skunks. Its seems to only be if the hunting is slow. I am always worried about getting on one with rabies or is sick. As far as messing with his nose he got on a skunk and a little bit later stuck a big ole boar.

Knock on wood I have never had a dog mess with skunks. Had about every thing else though, had one dog that would try to catch and kill every snake he came across...not good in Fla with all the moccasins and rattlesnakes.....I had to get rid of him for a yard dog, my heart couldn't take him trying to catch moccasins that were in the water...with ME!!

Also had my JJ dog catch a couple of otters. Now THAT is a bad cat when you get one riled up...long teeth and there is no where, I don't think, a dog can grab an otter that he can't bite back......

I had one that would bust a skunk when nothing else was moving. Get a one gallon pumpup spray jug. Add a half gallon of water, one box of baking soda, one bottle of 3% hydogen perxocide and a squirt of dish detergent mix well and keep on hand. Just a soon as you can after the dog busts a skunk soak the dog down with the mixture. One, it will make the dog smell better. Two, mine hated it worst than any beating. It did not take him long to learn to stop skunking!

in the vets office today and she had a warning posted from fort bend animal control about a skunk w/ "aggresive rabies" crawling through a window and attacking a kid and then the momma at some house in fort bend county.  apparently the aggresive form is much more rare than the "dumb" form but there is now one confirmed case.  so keep an eye on ole yeller.  that being said with my dogs the hunts not over till sombody gets skunked, thankfully gator has a totally different bark for skunks so i know when to run in and when to send in a newby
