So...went for a hunt this afternoon with my male dog and a new to me gyp.  Met my buddy at the place.  We were getting everything together and ready to go and i let my dogs out to do their buisness, cuz i walked them straight to the truck at the house.  I turned around to take a leak and i hear all hell break loose.  I run back around the truck and see my male dog and my buddies male dog goin at it...My buddy says he let his dog out of the box and my dog came out of nowhere and nailed him...
My dog has never done this before.  The only other times he's had little scuffles is when another dog jumped on him, and I am 100% sure the previous times were started by other dogs because i just happened to witness the whole ordeal...
My question is WTF?  Why did he all of a sudden do this dumb crap?  I wont tolerate a dog fighting like this.  It just has me scrathing my head Huh?...this dang dog, everytime he really shines and makes me proud, seems like the next hunt out he lets me down one way or another

dogs r territorial, ur dog mita thought he was alpha dog and the other male emitted a phermone to say he is alpha n urs dog held his ground n title. if ur dog has nvr show aggression, then something set him off or a fm was comin in heat.

I don't think that was the case, because she came from the buddy i was hunting with.  And, all these dogs have hunted together before

I have two males that when we are hunting they are fine you can even leash them together... But will fight at home everyday if they can get to each other... They can't ride in a box together either... One of them gets along with other dogs and my main strike dog only gets along with my bulldog...

Sounds like the signs were there -  "he has only ever fought when another dog jumps on him" seems like he's been building up to fighting for a while.  He see HIS packs as a bit bigger now and he wants to cement a place as top dog.

My advice is you need to be the top dog.  If dogs start a fight (no matter if they are mine or anyone elses) then I finish the fight using whatever means necessary.  After you have them seperated yell and scream and hit sheds, kennels etc to scare the living crap out of the dogs that are fighting (ALL OF THEM) what this does is establish you as the pack leader and settler of all disputes....

Gotta disagree with you there it takes a pretty sorry dog to not defend itself if another jumps on and starts a fight with them. If be prone to cull the both of them if that was the case one for being to stupid to even defend itself the other to want to start crap and fight. I do agree that the pecking order has to be set and they have to know that none of that is tolerated first and foremost.

Thanks for the replies...
I think the gyp came out of heat bout 2 months ago, so i dont think that is it.
And dont worry, there was plenty of "correcting" going on.  He normally has a great handle and i can just holler and the BS stops, but (as i said before) this was the first time he really tied ass with another dog.  And i think that cable lead got their attentions purdy quick.

I've been racking my brain on this...to get a lil more in depth on the story...i think i may have kinda figured it out.  I just gave his brother back to the boy i got them from.  These two have been together since birth.  Being penned together, or panned/chained right next to each other since birth.  Never had an issue between them.  So, my thinking is now that his brother is gone he is trying to establish the he is the lone "big dog", instead of being part of the two man team?Huh??
